Gráficas Reunidas was a Madrid commercial printer with no prior central bank relationship — the Banco de España turned to them for this issue because the Spanish Civil War had left the country's usual printing infrastructure in shambles and the postwar economy demanded small-denomination notes urgently. The peseta coin had effectively disappeared from everyday transactions, hoarded or melted, and paper had to substitute.
The 1940 1 Peseta series is notorious for poor paper quality and ink consistency, a direct consequence of wartime material shortages that persisted well into the early Franco years. Surviving examples frequently show pronounced foxing and toning.
