背面描述 The reverse presents the denomination within an open wreath composed of an oak branch to the left and an olive branch to the right, tied at the base with a decorative ribbon bow. The numeral 1 appears prominently in the upper field, with PENNY in bold capital letters below it at center. A decorative dash-and-dot ornament separates the denomination text from the lower wreath. The mint mark V, denoting the Berlin Mint, is positioned just above the inner dentilated border at the base of the design. The entire composition is enclosed within a fine dentilated rim border.

附加信息

The South African Republic issued pattern coinage in 1890 as part of an effort to establish a fully domestic monetary infrastructure — President Paul Kruger's government was pushing hard to reduce dependence on British and Cape Colony currency circulating in the Transvaal. Most patterns from this programme never advanced to circulation strikes, rejected either on design grounds or because the political calculus shifted before production contracts were finalised.

The Hern reference places this among a small group of bronze penny patterns documented from that year, none of which entered circulation.
