Obverse description The obverse displays the coat of arms of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (South African Republic) at center, featuring an oval cartouche supported by two vignettes: a reclining lion to the left and a standing Voortrekker figure to the right, with an anchor-bearing shield and a cannon below. Four flags arranged in saltire form flank the central shield, and a displayed eagle with outstretched wings surmounts the entire composition. The motto legend EENDRACHT MAAKT MACHT (Unity Makes Strength) curves along the lower portion of the oval cartouche. The circular legend ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK runs along the upper periphery, with the date 1890 appearing in large numerals at the base of the field, flanked by two five-pointed stars. A fine dentilated border frames the entire design.
