| 表面の説明 | Central device depicts a hand-loom weaver seated at a large wooden frame loom, rendered in fine relief against an unadorned field. The figure is shown in profile, working at the loom's heddles and beams, illustrating the textile trade for which Barnsley was regionally noted. The scene is enclosed within a beaded border that follows the coin's circumference. No legend appears on the obverse, the entire surface being devoted to the trade vignette. The style is consistent with the provincial token engraving tradition of the early nineteenth century. |

Barnsley in 1812 was a modest linen and cloth market town, and Jackson & Lister's Warehouse was the kind of retail and wholesale drapery operation that dominated its high street commerce. Provincial tradesmen issued copper tokens during this period because the Royal Mint had effectively abandoned small denomination coinage — regal copper pennies and halfpennies were struck in quantity only sporadically, leaving retailers to solve their own change shortage. The token issuers bore the cost of production and redeemed them at face value, absorbing the loss as a cost of doing business.
Withers #11 and Davis #76 catalogue the same piece under slightly differing classifications, a minor bibliographic split common to Yorkshire provincials of this series.
