Obverse description Central field bears the merchant's trade designation in three lines: GROCER / & / Co., rendered in large incuse-style raised lettering. The circular legend JAMES WALLACE around the upper arc and WELLINGTON along the lower arc frames the central inscription, all enclosed within a beaded border. The overall design is typographic in character, with no pictorial elements, consistent with mid-nineteenth century New Zealand tradesman's token practice.
