Obverse description Central field bears the merchant's trade designation in three lines: GROCER / & / Co., rendered in large incuse-style raised lettering. The circular legend JAMES WALLACE around the upper arc and WELLINGTON along the lower arc frames the central inscription, all enclosed within a beaded border. The overall design is typographic in character, with no pictorial elements, consistent with mid-nineteenth century New Zealand tradesman's token practice.

Reverse description A classically draped female figure, emblematic of Commerce or Justice, is depicted seated facing left in the central field, extending her right arm to hold a balance scale aloft. Her left arm cradles a cornucopia resting at her side. In the left background, a sailing vessel is visible on the sea, reinforcing mercantile symbolism. The date 1859 appears in the exergue below the main device. The entire design is enclosed within a finely executed beaded border.
