| Obverse description | The obverse is entirely typographic, bearing no figurative design elements. The field displays in large raised letters arranged in three horizontal lines: 'W.D. WOOD' at the top, followed by 'WINE & SPIRIT' in the centre, and 'MERCHANT' below. The peripheral legend reads 'MONTPELIER RETREAT' at the top and 'HOBART TOWN' at the bottom, separated by raised dots serving as stops. The whole is enclosed within a beaded border, typical of Australian colonial tradesman's token coinage of the 1850s. |
