Obverse description Central field features a detailed engraved view of the Montpellier Retreat Inn, Hobart Town, depicted as a two-storey colonial building with a columned facade in the foreground and a further structure with chimneys and a flagpole visible behind. The architectural rendering is executed in fine relief with perspective detail typical of W.J. Taylor's London die-work. A toothed or beaded border runs along the inner rim. The legend MONTPELLIER RETREAT INN is inscribed in raised Latin lettering along the upper arc, while W.D. WOOD appears in the lower arc below the central device.
