Beschrijving keerzijde Seated figure of Britannia in right profile, helmeted and draped in classical robes, occupying the central field. She holds a trident upright in her right hand and rests her left hand upon a large oval shield bearing the Union flag, positioned to her left. A suggestion of water appears beneath her feet, evoking her maritime dominion. The denomination ONE PENNY is inscribed vertically on either side of the figure within a beaded inner border, and the date 1895 appears in the exergue below. The overall design is enclosed by a beaded rim.

Aanvullende informatie

The 1895 penny marked Victoria's transition to the "old head" portrait — her fourth and final obverse type — meaning this 1895 pattern piece documents the trial and rejection process that preceded that change. Pattern pennies of this period were struck in very small numbers for internal evaluation, never entering circulation. The Fman R19 rarity rating indicates fewer than twenty examples are recorded. BMC Eng#2066 places it firmly in the "extremely rare" category.
