Obverse description Counterstamped face of a Union Copper Company one penny token, overstruck by Bradford Workhouse. The central field bears the raised inscription ONE / PENNY / TOKEN in three lines within an inner circle. A circular legend reading FOR PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION surrounds the inner circle, with BRADFORD and WORKHOUSE appearing at the upper and lower portions respectively, applied by the counterstamp. The surfaces show the characteristic double-struck relief typical of overstamped emergency coinage of the period.
