Christopher & Jennett were ironmongers operating in Stockton-on-Tees, and this 1813 issue belongs to the last significant wave of British provincial copper tokens — struck privately because the Royal Mint had catastrophically failed to supply adequate small change for commercial use throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. By 1813, Parliament was already moving to suppress the token trade, and the Coinage Act of 1817 effectively ended it. Pieces from this final phase rarely circulated for long before being called in or hoarded.
