正面描述 The obverse displays the Arms of Victoria at centre, featuring a quartered shield with mining and pastoral emblems, surmounted by a rising sun with radiating rays. The shield is supported on the left by a kangaroo and on the right by a woman (or emu in some renditions), resting on a decorative foliate base. The peripheral legend reads SOUTHWARD & SUMPTON in the upper arc and BALLARAT along the lower arc, with ADVANCE BALLARAT also present, all within a beaded border. The maker's attribution is noted in small lettering at the lower left of the field.

附加信息

Southward & Sumpton operated a general store in Ballarat during the peak of the Victorian gold rush, and like many colonial merchants of the 1850s, they turned to privately issued copper tokens to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued the diggings. The British government was slow to supply adequate coinage to the colonies, and the gap was filled by a cottage industry of tradesmen's tokens struck mostly in Birmingham and shipped to Australia.

Andrews #501 places this among the better-documented Ballarat issues, though the firm itself left little trace in the commercial record beyond the token.
