Robert III's coinage was struck under conditions of near-total royal incapacity. Crippled by a riding accident before he even took the throne, Robert effectively ceded governance to his brother, the Duke of Albany, and later attempted to remove his son David from Albany's influence — an effort that ended with David's death in Falkland Castle in 1402, almost certainly by starvation. The king who authorized these pennies was, by his own admission, the worst of men born to rule.
Spink 5182 distinguishes this second issue from the first by the annulet stops in the legend.
