Thomas Holloway built one of the most aggressive advertising empires of Victorian England, spending an estimated £50,000 annually on press notices alone by the 1850s — a figure that dwarfed most competitors and made his name inescapable across the English-speaking world. These tokens were part of that machinery: issued to promote Holloway's Pills and Holloway's Ointment, proprietary remedies he marketed as universal cures and sold through a global distribution network stretching from London to Australia. The tokens functioned as advertising vehicles rather than currency, though their weight and diameter kept them circulating plausibly alongside legitimate coinage.
Holloway eventually channeled his fortune into the Royal Holloway College, founded in 1879.
