The Orange Free State issued its own coinage only briefly — the republic's independent monetary history runs from 1874 to 1902, when annexation by Britain following the Second Boer War ended it entirely. The 1888 penny is a pattern issue, as indicated by its X# prefix, meaning it was never formally approved for circulation. Nickel-plated pieces in this series are particularly scarce; the Hern reference O17 distinguishes this specific plating variant from copper and other experimental strikings produced in the same period.
