Obverse description The obverse features the coat of arms of the Orange Free State centrally positioned within the field, depicting a quartered shield bearing an ox wagon wheel, an orange tree, and a lion passant, surmounted by a fur-trimmed crest. The shield is flanked by symmetrical laurel and olive branches tied at the base, with a small six-pointed star appearing in each lower quadrant of the field. A ribbon banner below the shield bears the motto legend GEDULD EN MOED in raised Latin lettering. The legend ORANJE VRYJSTAAT arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded border, and the date 1888 is inscribed in the lower exergue.

Reverse description The reverse displays the denomination numeral '1' above the word PENNY in large, bold serif lettering, centrally positioned within an open field. The denomination is framed by a wreath of oak leaves and acorns, whose branches meet at a decorative floral tie at the base. The engraver's initials 'L.L.' appear on a small raised tablet at the lower center of the field, just below the denomination inscription. The entire design is contained within a beaded border consistent with the obverse.
