The "Small Series" designation distinguishes this issue from the firm's earlier, heavier tokens — a deliberate reduction reflecting both minting costs and the gradual improvement in official coin supply.
New Zealand's Trade Tokens Act of 1881 effectively killed the private token trade the same year this piece was struck.
