Milner & Thompson operated a chain of general stores across New Zealand's South Island in the 1870s and 1880s, and their tradesman's tokens filled a genuine gap — the colonial government's copper coinage supply from Britain was chronically slow and irregular. The "Small Series" designation distinguishes these from the firm's earlier, heavier issues, a reduction driven by cost rather than any official directive.
Christchurch was the commercial hub of Canterbury Province, and tokens like this one circulated freely in lieu of official coinage until the New Zealand Tokens Prohibition Act of 1881 effectively ended private token issue.
