| Obverse description | A bold Cross of Jerusalem occupies the central field, formed by four equal-armed crosses arranged in quadrants, each containing a smaller crosslet at its centre. The overall design creates a distinctive heraldic saltire pattern characteristic of Scottish hammered coinage of the period. The peripheral legend MARIA D G SCOTOR REGINA runs around the outer edge, partially visible given the irregular flan. The style is typical of mid-sixteenth century Scottish hammered billon coinage, with the design struck on an uneven, roughly circular planchet. |
