| Obverse description | Facing crowned bust of King Malcolm IV in a crude, stylised manner typical of 12th-century Scottish hammered coinage. The king is depicted with a pellet-adorned crown and long hair falling to either side, with a sceptre or staff visible to one side. The portrait fills much of the field with minimal negative space, rendered in a flat, archaic style characteristic of the period. A partial legend surrounds the bust, though the lettering is often weak or partially visible due to the irregular flan. |
