Kirkcaldie & Stains, the Wellington department store founded in 1863, issued this token during a period when small-denomination coinage was chronically short in New Zealand's provincial economy. Private tradesmen's tokens filled the gap left by an underdeveloped colonial currency supply, and the practice was widespread across New Zealand between roughly 1857 and 1881, when the government moved to suppress private issues.
Andrews 311 is among the better-documented Wellington merchant tokens. The store itself survived until 2016 — over 150 years of continuous trading, making it one of the longest-lived retail businesses in New Zealand's history.
