Obverse description Left-facing crowned bust of King John Balliol, depicted in a stylised medieval manner typical of hammered Scottish coinage. The king wears a crown with fleur-de-lis points and a plain neckline suggesting a draped effigy. The bust occupies the central field, surrounded by a circular legend in uncial lettering. The portrait is rendered in a bold, slightly crude die-cut style characteristic of late 13th-century Scottish moneyers.
