James VI's copper penny issues of 1619 and 1623 were among the first officially sanctioned copper coinage in Scotland, a metal long resisted by the Scottish crown as beneath royal dignity. The decision to strike in copper was driven by a chronic shortage of small change rather than any monetary preference — silver simply couldn't be produced in denominations small enough for everyday petty transactions.
Spink 5526 encompasses both dates under a single type, reflecting how little the dies were altered between issues. The 1623 striking followed the king's death by two years in England, though James retained the Scottish crown separately until his death in 1625.
