Additional information

James Stanley, the 10th Earl of Derby, held the lordship of Mann under a feudal arrangement known as the Revestment — though that transfer to the Crown didn't occur until 1765, more than three decades after this coin was struck. Derby issued copper coinage for the island under his own authority, a privilege the Stanley family had exercised since the 15th century. The arrangement was commercially motivated as much as administrative: the earls profited directly from the island's monetary supply.

KM#5a distinguishes this from the earlier 5 variant by a subtle die difference documented in specialist literature on Manx coinage.
