The "Light Issue" designation refers to a deliberate reduction in the penny's silver content and weight, part of a broader debasement policy during one of the most politically turbulent stretches of James III's reign. In 1482, a faction of Scottish nobles — including the king's own brother, Albany — seized James at Lauder Bridge and held him briefly in Edinburgh Castle. Coinage decisions from this period reflect the fiscal strain of a crown under serious internal pressure.
Spink 5283 is among the scarcer pennies of the reign precisely because the Light Issue window was short.
