| Beschrijving voorzijde | Crude hammered bust of King Aethelred II facing left, executed in the Hiberno-Norse imitative style derived from the English Crux type. The effigy is enclosed within a plain inner circle and displays stylised drapery indicated by incised parallel lines at the shoulder and neck. Pellets are distributed in the field surrounding the bust, a characteristic feature of Dublin imitative coinage. The surrounding legend, partially garbled as typical of Hiberno-Norse issues, reads ✠ TTLRED X RE FR • OX, a corrupt rendering of ETHELRED REX FRANCORVM or similar Anglo-Saxon royal titulature. The coin retains good silver surfaces with natural toning. |
