The Long Cross penny was introduced in 1247 under Henry III specifically to combat widespread clipping — by extending the cross to the coin's edge, any removal of silver became immediately visible. Class 5c falls within the mid-1250s recoinage period, when provincial mints at Canterbury, Durham, and Bury St Edmunds operated alongside London to meet demand.
