Obverse description The heraldic arms of Andover occupy the central field, depicting a lion passant with prominently defined ribs and a flat, unadorned ground behind the forepaws. The shield is rendered in relief with attention to heraldic detail characteristic of the provincial token engraving tradition. The circular legend enclosing the arms reads ANDOVER TOKEN . FOR ONE PENNY . in incuse or raised Latin lettering along the periphery. The overall design reflects the municipal pride typical of early nineteenth-century English tradesmen's tokens.
