Henry J. Hall operated as a general merchant in Christchurch during the early Canterbury settlement period, when the chronic shortage of official British coinage in New Zealand forced traders to commission their own copper tokens. These merchant tokens circulated on trust — their value entirely dependent on the issuer's local reputation and the expectation of redemption at the counter.
