Obverse description Central field features the merchant's name 'H.J.HALL' in bold raised lettering across the middle, flanked above and below by elongated horizontal bar devices. Two floriated cross ornaments are positioned symmetrically at left and right of the central text, serving as decorative stops within the circular legend. The peripheral legend reads 'CHRISTCHURCH' along the upper arc and 'COFFEE MILLS' along the lower arc, all in incuse capital Latin letters. The overall design is plain and typographic in character, typical of colonial New Zealand tradesman's tokens of the mid-to-late nineteenth century.
