New Zealand's coinage carried British Royal Mint production through most of the early postwar years, with local striking capacity limited. The "2nd type" designation marks the post-1948 portrait by Thomas Humphrey Paget, replacing the earlier effigy and dropping the "Emperor of India" title from the legend — a direct consequence of Indian independence in 1947 and the formal end of the imperial title under the Royal Titles Act.
The 1952 issues are the final George VI pennies for New Zealand; the king died in February of that year.
