Australia's penny supply during World War II became a genuine logistical problem. The Melbourne Mint struggled to meet wartime demand while simultaneously producing ammunition components, and in 1942 and 1943 the Royal Mint in London and the Bombay Mint were both pressed into service striking Australian pennies — the only instances of Australian coinage being produced in India. Bombay-struck pieces carry a small dot or differ subtly in die workmanship, and attributing them correctly remains a point of contention among specialists.
The 1946 issue is notably scarce in circulation grades, with mintage figures that have never been fully reconciled against surviving populations.
