Southern Rhodesia gained the right to issue its own coinage in 1932 following the establishment of the Currency Board, breaking from the South African penny that had previously circulated by default. The 1937 date marks the first year of George VI coinage for the territory, struck following Edward VIII's abdication — meaning Southern Rhodesia, like most of the Empire, never produced a circulating penny for Edward at all.
The copper-nickel composition was a deliberate departure from the bronze pennies used in Britain, chosen partly for durability in the colony's conditions.
