In 1919, the Melbourne Mint conducted an extended trial to replace the large bronze penny with a smaller copper-nickel coin, partly to reduce production costs and align with overseas trends toward smaller-denomination coinage. The kookaburra patterns emerged from this program in at least five distinct types, differentiated by edge treatment, die alignment, and compositional variants — KM#Pn9 representing the fourth recorded configuration.
None advanced to circulation. The proposal was ultimately shelved, and Australia retained the large penny format until decimalization in 1966.
