New Guinea's first coinage was authorized following the territory's formal transfer to Australian administration under a League of Nations mandate in 1920. These coins were struck at the Kings Norton Metal Company in Birmingham, not at any Australian mint — a detail that distinguishes them from the broader Australian colonial series.
