The George V penny series opened in 1911 with a modified effigy by Bertram Mackennal, whose initials BM on the truncation drew immediate public complaint — the abbreviation being slang for a bodily function. The initials were reduced in size but never removed. Production across this run was largely uninterrupted except for 1915–1917, when bronze was diverted to shell casings and penny output dropped sharply before recovering toward the end of the war.
The 1926 modified effigy variant, distinguished by a redesigned portrait, technically bridges this series into the next.
