Nova Scotia's copper token coinage of the early 1830s was authorised to address a chronic shortage of small change that plagued the Maritime colonies — British regal copper rarely made it across the Atlantic in sufficient quantities, and locally-issued merchant tokens filled the gap unevenly. The 1832 issue was struck in Birmingham, almost certainly by Boulton and Watt's successors at the Soho Mint, which had supplied colonial copper to British North America for decades.
The Breton 870 designation places this piece within a well-documented series, but die marriages within the NS-2B classification show measurable variation in the positioning of the date numerals.
