These pennies were struck at the Royal Mint in London following the Act of Union, which had abolished the separate Irish Mint decades earlier. The 1822–1823 issues were among the last copper pennies produced for Irish circulation before the currency was fully absorbed into the broader British system — after 1823, no further regal pennies were struck specifically for Ireland.
The series is known for uneven planchet quality, a recurring complaint in contemporary Mint correspondence.
