Obverse description The obverse is entirely typographic, bearing no central device. The denomination ONE PENNY is prominently displayed in large raised letters at the centre of the field, separated above and below by decorative rule bars. The circular legend reads FLAVELLE BROS & CO. at the top and OPTICIANS & JEWELLERS . SYDNEY & BRISBANE . around the lower periphery, all within a beaded border.

Reverse description The reverse depicts two iconic Australian fauna rendered in finely engraved relief: an emu to the left and a kangaroo to the right, both standing upright and facing one another upon a ground line with sparse native vegetation in the background. The composition is set within a plain field, and the maker's inscription W.J. TAYLOR LONDON appears in small letters along the lower exergual line. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
