Pobjoy Mint began striking Isle of Man coinage in 1973 after winning the contract from the Manx government, displacing the Royal Mint in a notable and at-the-time unusual privatization of a national coinage. The silver variant of this penny — issued alongside a base-metal circulation version — was produced specifically for collectors rather than commerce, a practice Pobjoy aggressively expanded during the 1970s to capitalize on growing interest in proof and specimen sets.
