The Isle of Man gained full control over its own coinage with the Coinage Act 1973, which transferred minting authority from the Crown to the Manx government — an arrangement that almost immediately produced one of the more distinctive decimal series in the British Isles. The Loaghtan, a native four-horned sheep breed that nearly went extinct in the mid-twentieth century before deliberate conservation efforts reversed its decline, was chosen partly as an act of cultural assertion.
