The Royal Shield pennies were produced in silver as part of the Royal Mint's annual proof and collector sets, never intended for circulation. The 2008 redesign was the work of Matthew Dent, chosen through a public competition — an unusual move for the Mint, which had historically commissioned designs through established artists. Dent's concept treated the reverse of six denominations as fragments of a single heraldic shield, a scheme not attempted in British coinage before.
The KM#1107a designation distinguishes this silver striking from its base-metal circulation counterpart, KM#1107.
