The switch to copper-plated steel for the penny was driven entirely by economics — rising copper prices had pushed the intrinsic metal value of the bronze penny uncomfortably close to its face value. The Royal Mint made the transition in 1992, running both bronze and steel planchets simultaneously that year, which is why 1992 pennies exist in both compositions. A magnet is the quickest way to distinguish them.
