Jersey's 1981 coinage came just ahead of the island's switch to copper-plated steel, making late bronze pennies from this period among the last of their alloy type in the series. The second Machin portrait, Arnold Machin's effigy adopted across most Commonwealth territories from 1968, was already being phased out on several issuing authorities by this point — Jersey retained it only briefly longer before the Raphael Maklouf portrait took over in 1985.
