Tristan da Cunha issues coins primarily for collectors rather than local circulation — the island's population of roughly 250 people conducts most daily trade informally, and British currency serves what little cash economy exists. The 2011 penny was part of a broader decimal coinage set released under the island's own issuing authority, a status it has held since 1952 despite having no mint of its own.
