| Obverse description | Laureate and draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, as modelled by Mary Gillick in her first portrait for Commonwealth coinage. The Queen's hair is styled with a wreath of laurel leaves, and the bust is rendered with fine detail characteristic of the Gillick portrait. A beaded border frames the design. The circumferential legend reads: + ELIZABETH·II·DEI·GRATIA·REGINA, notably omitting the 'F:D:' (Fidei Defensor) title present on later issues. |
