Australia retained the pre-decimal penny through a period of sustained political argument over decimalization, with the switch to cents and dollars finally legislated in 1963 and executed in 1966. These later bronze pennies were struck knowing full well they had a fixed expiry date. The Melbourne Mint carried the bulk of production, though Perth struck quantities in several years of this run.
The 'F:D:' abbreviation — Fidei Defensor, Defender of the Faith — was absent from the earliest Australian Elizabeth II pennies before being restored following Commonwealth pressure. Its reappearance on this type dates to 1955.
