Reverse description The reverse presents the seated allegorical figure of Britannia facing right, helmeted and draped in classical robes, as engraved by Charles Walter Coombes. She holds a trident upright in her raised right hand and rests her left hand upon a shield bearing the Union Flag, which leans against her side. A lighthouse and the sea appear in the background to the left, evoking Britain's maritime heritage. The denomination ONE PENNY is inscribed in two lines to either side of the figure, with the date 1953 placed in the exergue below. The design is enclosed within a beaded border.
