| Obverse description | Laureate and draped effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, as modelled by Mary Gillick. The legend QUEEN·ELIZABETH·THE·SECOND arcs around the periphery, with the engraver's initials M·G· incused on the truncation. Two varieties exist: KM#24.1 depicts the portrait without a shoulder strap, while KM#24.2 includes a shoulder strap detail on the truncation. The portrait is rendered in a refined, classical style characteristic of Gillick's work for Commonwealth coinage of the early Elizabethan era. |

| Reverse description | A Tui bird (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae; Māori: tūī) perches prominently on the flowering branches of a kōwhai tree (Sophora sp.), rendered in naturalistic relief. The circular legend NEW ZEALAND · ONE PENNY · arcs around the upper and lateral periphery, with the date positioned below the central device. The design, engraved by L.C. Mitchell, reflects the distinctly New Zealand flora and fauna iconography introduced for the Elizabethan coinage series. The overall composition is finely detailed, with the bird and blossoms occupying the central field. |
