| Obverse description | Crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth I facing left, depicted in a lace ruff and royal regalia consistent with early Elizabethan portraiture. The effigy is rendered in the hammered style typical of the period, with visible striations from the striking process. A legend in Latin encircles the portrait, reading E·D·G·ROSA·SINE·SPINA, identifying the queen as a rose without a thorn by the grace of God. The field is flat and irregular, characteristic of hammered coinage. The mintmark Lis (fleur-de-lis) appears at the start of the legend, denoting the 1559–1560 issue. |
